John McCarthy is one of the pioneers in research dealing with artificial
intelligence and is responsible for the widely used LISP language employed
in that field.  His scientific work also includes mathematical theory of
computation, time sharing computer systems, and studies of the social effects
of technology.  Since 1962, he has been Professor of Computer Science at
Stanford University and Director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence
Laboratory.
